Initially located in a WW2 hut in the orchard of Mollie Griffin’s garden, the Playhouse has seen Backwell grow around it, entertaining the village with countless plays, events and films for 75 years Join us as we celebrate our anniversary with an homage to the original opening performance.
FEATURING: Player Queen written by Playhouse Co-Founder, Kathleen Stafford First performed at Backwell Parish Hall in 1947, the play is set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I and imagines an evening where one of her ladies-in-waiting defies the Queen and dares to become one of Mr. Shakespeare’s players for the night!
AND: The Dumb Wife of Cheapside by Ashley Dukes The first play ever performed at Backwell Playhouse was "The Man Who Married A Dumb Wife" by Anatole France, translated by Ashley Dukes. The Playhouse honours that original performance with Ashley Dukes’ re-written version. It should be noted that this production contains some outdated attitudes and stereotypes that may offend. A Theatre Troupe present a cautionary fable to their audience about a newly-married haberdasher who longs to converse with his new, non-verbal wife. The moral of the story is to be careful what you wish for...
